Unsuccessful Eyeliner

Twenty years ago, a little girl noticed her father standing in front of the mirror. The father's right hand holds a small iron with a black tip. His left hand holds an iron container containing a solid powder that is also black.

The little girl recognized the powder under the name of Arabic. Slowly, the father polished the iron in his right hand to the lower eye line. The iron container in his left hand placed it and his left hand pressed his cheek downward so that his eyelids moved away from the eyeballs.

"Why do you wear limbs? Is not that for women? "Asked the little girl while continuing to pay attention to the father's ritual.

"This is wearing lace instead of beautiful, but for medicine, let the eyes stay healthy," replied his father. The Father believes that wearing Arabic lacy on the eyelids, protects the eyes from the sun.

The conversation went by until the little girl got older. Memories of the event re-emerged when he was 27 years old and curious about the idea of wearing the wool in the eye line.

The discovery of the fact that his father is not the only man who likes to wear a wig or eyeliner. In the 13th year before Christ, the aristocrats in ancient Egypt did not wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun, but wore the lips on the eyelid. That fact he found in the Journal of Egyptian Archeology published in May 1930 entitled "Cosmetics, Perfimes and Incense in Ancient Eqypt."

The habit of wearing the letters to these men also continues. In 1972, Mick Jagger, a rock star at that time often used the lips on his eyelids. Even so with David Bowie, Keith Richards and Johny Deep. They are a handful of men's list of creaks. The girl is increasingly convinced that her father who when young wore wearing is not an oddity. He is ordinary. A man wearing unusual wool. That girl is me.

In "Eyeliner, Egypt, 4000 BCE," Kelly Buffington explains that for centuries people have been fashioned using cosmetics for aesthetic or religious purposes. "The earliest archaeologist's evidence of cosmetic use can be traced back to the urban civilizations of the ancient world," he wrote.

He mentioned that in southern Iraq and in Egypt, both men and women alike have tears to make their eyes look bigger. They also believe that decorating the eyes with the wool will keep them from evil eyes. Gradually, he not only used the nobility, but also the commoners.

Unfortunately, after the fall of the Kingdom of Egypt, the use of faded and unpopular wax in European fashion. It is only used by a small number of people during the Kingdom of Greece and Roman rule. In Asia, eyeliner is still used, but not strong enough to affect European fashion

The turning point of eyeliner popularity came back in the 1920s, when European women had left the Viktoria-era fashion and focused on a new fashion fueled by the rise of performing arts.

After international cosmetics companies glance at this as a business opportunity, eyeliner never again decline. Especially as the population of women continues to grow and they begin to have a desire to imitate their favorite actress in Hollywood.

It was not until 1960, a designer Mary Quant in England popularized the use of liquid wool with a fine brush.

Now, the latter is better known by its English name, eyeliner. Words are more rarely used. The shape was no longer just a solid powder, there are gel, pencil, marker, or liquid. The color is also not just black, there is a brown, blue, purple, to white.

All facial cosmetics makeup manufacturers, definitely produce eyeliner. The three most popular eyeliner brands in Indonesia today are Maybeline, Oriflame, and Revlon. Maybeline holds 14.5 percent market share, Oriflame 13.4 percent, and Revlon 12.1 percent.

In fourth position there is Wardah, a cosmetic brand that comes up with kosher cosmetic terms. He controls 10.2 percent market share. Then there is Sariayu who controls 9.5 percent and Latulipe whose market share is only 7.2 percent.

The use of eyeliner is currently dominated by women. Even if there are men who still wear, usually only for the purposes of performing arts.
